“Ok Paul, what do you want next?”
I took a deep breath, straightened myself up, looked Willie straight in the eye and said: “A campsite, this time in the High Andes”. Then in a fairly audible mumble: “maybe along with another Home for Abandoned Boys”.
The very next day we made it all the way to a comfortable hotel in the mountain climbers paradise of Huaraz.
Early dawn and a view from our balcony which put the Alps on the back burner!
Incredible” said Willie. Then getting straight to the point: “So how do we make this happen?
“Buy us two taxi cabs. One will generate the salary of a Scripture Union staff worker, the other to develop our program.”
Rosa Torres came on staff in late 1999 and did a first class job developing a Christian ministry in the local schools of the Huaylas Valley. After all, she needed to prove the need for a campsite!
“Keep an eye open for a good sized piece of land” to which Rosa’s “but we have no money for that ” did not come as a surprise. Never has and never will. Nor will our Lord’s amazing provision.
And that once again came in 2002 when Señora Angeles, moved by our Project, sold us 9 acres of her land in full view of 22,000+ ft Mt. Huascaran at 25% of the going price!
In 2003 our first Mission Work Team arrived, which would be followed for the next 21 years by others, equally focused on building Kusi for the extension of God’s Kingdom in this little, far away piece of His world.
And yes, after completion of the Campsite, a Home for Abandoned Boys was built (completed in 2006), as was also a School, Workshops, income generating bungalows, medical and dental facilities and much more, topped off by the Chapel of the Good Shepherd.
Over 2 decades, showcasing the greatness of God by the response of His people in giving of their time and resources to reaching those who suffer and have never heard our Lord’s transforming Good News.
